US II- Ch. 35 Learning Objectives

Homework for Monday, 5/2:
Read about FDR and the Shadow of War, Ch. 35 pp. 806-818.
As you read, take notes on Study Goals (aka Learning Objectives) 1 and 2. (see below)
Print a copy of the Study Goals to keep in your binder.

Ch. 35 Study Goals -  Be able to:
  1. Describe the isolationist motives and effects of FDR's early foreign policies.
  2. Explain how American isolationism dominated U.S. policy in the mid-1930s
  3. Explain how America gradually began to respond to the threat from totalitarian aggression while still trying to stay neutral.
  4. Describe Roosevelt's increasingly bold moves toward aiding Britain in the fight against Hitler and the sharp disagreements these efforts caused at home.
  5. Discuss the events and diplomatic issues in the Japanese-American conflict that led up to Pearl Harbor.

Advanced U.S. History I Homework 2011-04-15

1. Read Chapter 17 - Manifest Destiny and Its Legacy
2. Print Chapter 17 Learning Objectives (below)
3. Make a list of important people, places, and things from Chapter 17 to bring to class on Monday to go over for term quiz
4.  Don't forget to work on your research paper, and make a little progress on your Chapter 11-12 packet.

Please note: Chapter 17 Term Quiz will be TUESDAY APRIL 19th

Chapter 17 Learning Objectives:  By the end of this unit, be able to

  1. Explain the spirit of Manifest Destiny that inspired American expansionism in the 1840s
  2. indicate how American anti-British feeling led to various conflicts over debts, Maine, Canadian rebellion, Texas, and Oregon
  3. explain why the movement to annex Texas gained new momentum and why the issue aroused such controversy
  4. indicate how the issues of Oregon and Texas became central in the election of 1844 and why Polk's victory was seen as a mandate for Manifest Destiny (look up "mandate" in dictionary, please!)
  5. describe how issues of California and Texas boundaries created conflict and war with Mexico.
  6. describe how the dramatic American victory in the Mexican War led to the acquisition of the entire Southwest
  7. describe the consequences of the Mexican War, especially its effect on the slavery question.
